Volumio

Apple’s SharePlay is great for playing the music on your device to your connected speakers (Sonos, HomePod, RaspberryPi running Shairport-Sync) around the house, but its another device sat doing one job.

Volumio comes in two flavours a prebuilt system for the audiophiles and an enthusiast version built from a Raspberry Pi, this is version I built and use in my shed for streaming music in the garden,

Raspberry Pi Imager - Volumio

Using the Raspberry Pi SD card imager is the easiest way to install Volumio, after you’ve built the system updates are available via the Volumio user interface.

Streaming isn’t the only thing it can do. It can play any of the popular music files, MP3 and FLAC are bread and butter for it, whilst being able to stream internet radio too.

Volumio Player

The Pi is a headless system, with only power and speakers connected. To control the Volumio software you’re able to connect via a web browser or the app from your phone. There is also the option add plugins from Bandcamp or Spotify to simplify music streaming.

Volumio Plugin Bandcamp

Whilst serving all you streaming or saved music needs, Volumio can also work as a internet radio steamer.
