ImageOptim

Compressing images without losing quality

Slow page loading times are not only annoying they potentially steer viewers away from your website. I’ve been using an app called ImageOptim by Kornel Lesiński to compress all images I use on my websites and customers sites for a while now.

ImageOptim compresses the file without losing the quality when displayed in web browsers, so your viewers don’t miss out on the experience, this also protects your high-quality images from being copied too (I don’t want to say stolen) and gives you control over your media.

The app couldn’t be any easier to use, after firing it up, just drag and drop the picture you wish to compress and watch the magic happen.

The above picture went from 2.1Mb to 1.6Mb and it still looks as good. The application itself is tiny but very powerful, it’s a mainstay on all my machines and something I always recommend to other webby and design people.

The Eurowerks logo isn’t the best example to work with due to the size and setting the quality level to 11 in Photoshop.

It's all about marginal gains and making everything faster to keep the viewer’s attention span, ImageOptim is defo one of my go-to applications now.
